Sandstone, also known as arentie is a clastic sedimentary rock that is made up of small pieces of sand minerals or rock grains. Quartz and feldspar are the main components on sandstone. This is because these minerals are common in the Earth’s crust. Sandstone has a variety of color. Common colors are tan, brown, yellow, red, gray, pink, black and white. Sandstone is mostly composed of rock formations that have large pours. These pours allow water, and other liquids to be held in the stone. Sandstone is collected by a technique called quarrying. Quarry is a type of open-pit mining. They use this type of mining for building material such as sand and gravel. Sandstone originates from dry places such as the Sahara Desert, Arabian Desert, and the Australian Desert. In the western United States, sandstone usually had a red color to it. Sandstone has multiple uses. Since prehistoric times, Sandstone has been used for domestic construction and housewares. It is soft, which gives the advantage of making it easy to carve. It is popular in the creation of temples, cathedrals, home and other buildings as well. It used for artistic purposes such as statues. Sandstone is resistant to weathering, making it easy for paving work to be done. They are formed from cemented grains that may either be pieces of existing rock or monominerallic crystal. There are two stages for the formation of sandstone. First, the layers of sand accumulate either from water, or air depending where the sandstone is coming from. The sand settles within each other, once it has completed that it is compacted by pressure of overlying deposits and cemented by the precipitation of minerals within the pore spaces between sand grains. The most common cementing materials are silica and calcium carbonate. The color of the sandstone will mostly likely be tan or yellow depending on the blend of minerals. In western United States, the additional colorant is iron oxide which gives the sandstone a reddish pink color. This is where the term Terracotta comes from. This is very popular in masonry and or any other type of construction.
