Marble is a metamorphic rock. It is non-foliated and is composed of calcite or dolomite. The term marble is used to refer to metamorphosed limestone. Marble uses are for sculpting and as a building material. Marble comes from the Greek word “crystalline rock”, or “shining stone”. Marble is a result from metamorphism of sedimentary carbonate rocks. Metamorphism is when variable go through recrystallization of the original mineral grains. The end result of marble is composed of interlocking carbonated crystals. Depending on the color, the characteristics of the stone differ.
White marble is known for sculptures. It has to do with its softness, and resistance to shattering. When light penetrates through the surface, it allows the stone to be scattered out which gives it the life effect. Construction marble is composed of calcite, dolomite or serpentine which is very durable against polish.

Marble production is high in prices. For almost 80,000 tons of marble, it costs around 19 million dollars. The largest dimension that marble is sold in is tile. Pakistan is one of the world largest exporters while China, is the chief importer of marble. Artificial marble is a mixture of dust and cement that gives the appearance of marble. It is stimulated with faux marbling which is a painting technique that mimics the stones original color and pattern. For Greek and Roman sculptors, marble is part of their tradition. It symbolizes important events, and is a favorite yet important material to them. Marble can be found in museums around the world, also located in the United States.
